Once Upon A Book Club Box YA: June
Despite not loving the book itself, I had another completely wonderful Once Upon A Book Club YA box experience this June.
For me, while the book certainly inspires the gifts and the experience of feeling like you’re pulling items straight from the pages, I’m able to appreciate the attention to detail, the clever packaging, and the inspired selections even when the story doesn’t work for me personally.
And I can certainly admire how beautiful the actual book is, with these gorgeous hidden details beneath the book jacket.
Dark Breaks the Dawn, Sara B. Larson
On her eighteenth birthday, Princess Evelayn of Eadrolan, the Light Kingdom, can finally access the full range of her magical powers. The light looks brighter, the air is sharper, and the energy she can draw when fighting feels almost limitless.
But while her mother, the queen, remains busy at the war front, in the Dark Kingdom of Dorjhalon, the corrupt king is plotting. King Bain wants control of both kingdoms, and his plan will fling Evelayn onto the throne much sooner than she expected.
In order to defeat Bain and his sons, Evelayn will quickly have to come into her ability to shapeshift, and rely on the alluring Lord Tanvir. But not everyone is what they seem, and the balance between the Light and Dark comes at a steep price.
There was a certain amount of explanation missing from the worldbuilding, and the points included in the book blurb weren’t as important or presented in as interesting a manner as they are in the summary.
Perhaps because I read a fair bit of Fantasy, this one didn’t quite hold up against the titles nearest and dearest to my heart.
“When the door opened and a page entered the room, holding a tray with a white card, Ceren nearly closed her eyes to pray it would be for her…”
Evelayn sends a note to her best friend Ceren, here we have our own little tray and a replica of note.
“I have hot tea ready for you, and your favorite scone.”
Inspired by how Ceren tries to keep Evelayn’s spirits up, we get a teacup style silicone cupcake liner, and a packet of tea. Included at the end of the book is a recipe for a single serve vanilla cupcake!
“...Evelayn shook her head as she bent to put on her slippers.”
These lacy sock slippers are definitely fit for royalty and my goodness, oh so cute. They look deceptively small, but they fit my size 9 feet perfectly.
“It had a thin band with diamonds all the way around it, and an unbelievably clear, pink center diamond, surrounded by small white diamonds…”
Tanvir’s engagement ring sounds dreamy and the ring included in the box is every bit as gorgeous in real life!
As always, I love the blend of the practical and fanciful when it comes to the type of gifts included in each month’s box! I now have items that I can include in my day to day life, like the socks and the tray, while also enjoying a little something extra special, like wearing the ring or baking myself a mini cupcake.
